Description

This is my entry for Devious Deadlines #006, "Hectic Action."

This week's assignment took me outside my comfort zone for sure. I wanted a painterly feel instead of smooth blends and such. I think I accomplished that in some places, but less so in others.

This is probably the most thoroughly I have used MyPaint and GIMP together. The mountains, helicopter, road/ground, and fellow biker were all given some motion blur love.

This composition has convinced me that my weekly assignment concepts are too ambitious for now. I think I need to narrow my scope and come up with ideas with a smaller number of elements, so I can give them the amount of love they deserve.

Edit 2-27: Added more dramatic light, darker shadows and tint from the sunset. Also made the blur on the stationary items more apparent.

It is indeed an ambitious scene you have set out to create here. It's not quite finished yet, which you yourself also note (due to lack of time in these Devious-Deadline challenges).
First, I like that you have really went for action here, clearly in the vein of the challenge! You have a dynamic horizon, hi-tech gadgetry, right out of an action movie. It's clear what's going on and the different elements are balanced in the image.
If you intend to finish this up after the deadline has passed, I have some suggestions for improvements; First one is light. You have all the awnings of a dramaticly lit scene here - the sun is low, power bikes glinting, long shadows cast. I could well imagine exaggerating the shadows here - have the front bicyclist cast long volumetric shadows, as if s/he's "bathing in light" for example. Overall, increasing contrasts and shadowing in the image will also make it much more dynamic I think.

Secondly, this would look stunning with some GIMP filters such as motion blur - it's exactly this stuff filters are there for. Make a copy of your visible image in a new layer, apply the blur, then softly erase at the parts you want sharp still. the effect, combined with powerful light conntasts, could become very powerful.

So, lacking compared to its potential impact, but looking very promising so far!
